Yes, if you die you lose everything on the character. However you can use Grim Dawn Item Assistant to move gear between HC and softy, which is technically cheating but meh, doesn't feel like it. So you can't take advantage of things your non-HC characters have saved up. You can use the shared item chest but only with other hardcore characters. What exactly happens when you die on Hardcore? Character completely erased? The latter question is the main one I'm wondering about because if I am able to use some of the gear I have acquired from my current character, I don't want to lose it forever due to an accidental death or something.
